Canada Games Selection for Athletics Competition

January 23, 2017, 2:21 PM

Athletics PEI is in the process of selecting its teams for the 2017 Canada Games  and the 2017 Legion Games to be held in Manitoba in July-August 2017.

Provincial Coach Colin MacAdam indicated “We are well along our path towards the selection of our teams. We have identified a number of athletes as a training team and are working hard trying to achieve performance goals this winter.”

The training team consists of a number of athletes competing at Maritime universities as well as many at the high school level. The age for the 2017 Canada Games Athletics competition is anyone born in 1995 or after and the age for the Legions is everyone born after January 2000. Anyone wishing to have their names considered must be members in good standing of Athletics PEI.

MacAdam also said that athletes would be competing in a number of indoor meets in New Brunswick, Quebec and Nova Scotia in preparation for the track and field season next spring and summer. “We are working with all those athletes we have identified, but it is not too late for athletes to commit to the Canada Games.” MacAdam said. The criteria for selection is based on performance levels and commitment to training and are described in full on the Athletics PEI website. Final selection will be made on June 28.

MacAdam also noted that selection criteria for the Legion Games in Manitoba were also on the website. “We are looking forward to our best Athletics performance at the Canada Games since 2005 (when Jared Connaughton won two gold medals.) We have a number of legitimate medal contenders with Alex Cyr, Alex Nueffer, Constance Gilman, Bailey Smith, and Michaela Walker all competing at high levels recently. In addition, we had a strong Legion team last year and are looking to improve in that age group as well. “ MacAdam concluded.

Athletics PEI is also sponsoring a Learn to Run program at Birchwood Junior High on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30. This is open for athletes in any sport from Grades 3 to 8.
